We’re thrilled to welcome Jeanette Fabian as our Women’s Health Ambassador. Lots of you will know Jeanette as one of our Complex Care Coordinators, with a multifaceted career in health and social care, Jeanette is a passionate advocate for improving access and equity in women’s health.
Why Women’s Health Advocacy Matters
Despite progress, women continue to face disparities in healthcare access, research, and awareness. Many conditions unique to women are under diagnosed or misunderstood, and taboos around topics like menopause and reproductive health persist, especially in the workplace.
“I am very honoured to be the Women’s Health Ambassador for HASCS with the hope that I can raise awareness of the issues that can occur in the workplace regarding Women’s Health. I believe that too often women are expected to “just get on with it” when they are facing quite debilitating health issues both physically and mentally and still expected to get good grades at school/college/university, raise a family, maintain relationships and go to work . From an early age women experience changes in their body which starts with puberty and ends with the menopause. These changes can cause a wide spectrum of conditions which affect our everyday life , a few symptoms from a very exhaustive list are excessive bleeding, migraines, mood swings, PMT , excessive sweating, hot flushes, insomnia, extreme fatigue, brain fog, dry itchy skin, hair loss, acne…. I could go on and on, but we will cover this and more during May which is Women’s Health Month.
I am also passionate about something called “Period Poverty”, I found it shocking that in the UK, which is considered an affluent country, there are 1000’s of young girls that miss school, college, and social activities on a regular basis due to not being able to afford sanitary products. This is such a detriment to their mental wellbeing and physical health and can cause shame and stigma across our society. There are so many ways successive governments could have addressed this, but all have failed to do so, removing VAT from sanitary products, known as the “Pink Tax” would help in a small way but has never been implemented. Thankfully, there are now lots of initiatives happening across the world that are beginning to cause ripples and make people aware so hopefully over the coming years the disparity in the wellbeing of different sections of society can be diminished.
Over the next month, and beyond, we hope to shine a spotlight on issues that women face every day and provide information and resources that will make our lives that little bit easier. I hope you enjoy reading all our blogs and posts and we would also love to hear from you if you have anything to share.“
