Without our teams of healthcare workers, support workers and nurses, we couldn’t do what we do. Meet Jo, Complex Care Support Worker.
My job title is Complex Care Support Worker, and I have been working with HASCS since November 2023. My career journey has been anything but conventional, and I believe this varied background has equipped me with a unique set of skills and perspectives that enhance my ability to provide exceptional care.
Before starting this role, I had already dipped my toes into the care sector, working in a residential school for autistic children. That experience gave me my first taste of how rewarding and impactful care work could be. However, life took me in many different directions before I found my current role in complex care. Fun fact, one of the more unique experiences in my work history includes operating a digger and dumper! I’ve worked on building sites as both a labourer and a painter and decorator, which gave me a hands-on, problem-solving approach to challenges. I’ve also worked with horses and children in separate roles.
When I came across a job advertisement for a role for my current service user online, complex care wasn’t something I had considered before. Starting out was undoubtedly scary, but it was also one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
What I’ve discovered in this role is how much of a difference I can make. Building a relationship with my client and their family has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this job. We’ve developed a strong rapport, and we have a real good understanding of fun! No two days are the same.
If you’ve ever thought about starting something new but felt hesitant, my advice is: don’t be afraid. Stepping into a new role—even one that seems intimidating—could be the best career move. If you have a caring side and a genuine desire to make a difference in someone’s life, then becoming a carer might just be the perfect path for you.
Looking back at my journey, from driving diggers to supporting clients with complex needs, I’ve learned that every experience contributes to who you are and what you bring to the table. For me, this role has been more than just a job—it’s been an opportunity to connect, grow, and truly make an impact.
